Why Indy Reads?

Literacy is a human right. To thrive at work, home, and in the community requires at least a twelfth-grade level of literacy. But in Central Indiana, more than 300,000 adults read below the fifth-grade level, and one in thirteen of our neighbors are learning English as a new language.

Indy Reads is here to change that. Our community classrooms serve a wide range of learners, from the lowest levels of native English speakers and English Language Learners, up through High School Equivalency, Workforce Literacy, and beyond. Indy Reads community bookstore offers books to the community at all price points and serves as a hub of literary and community connection.  Our comprehensive literacy program model makes us the only organization in Central Indiana uplifting all levels of adult learners, their families, and our whole community – driving equity through literacy.
